Short Biography

I am an assistant professor in the School of Electronic Engineering and School of Computer Science & Engineering at the Soongsil University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Before joining Soongsil in 2020, I was a postdoctoral associate in Lab. for the Algorithmic Brain, Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine(BCM), Houston, TX, USA working with Prof. Xaq Pitkow. Before I joined Xaq Lab., I was a postdoctoral researcher in Multiagent Communications and Networking Lab.(MCNL) at the Ewha Womans University, Seoul, South Korea. I received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electronic and electrical engineering from the Ewha Womans University, Seoul, South Korea in 2011, 2013 and 2017, respectively. In 2012, I was an intern at LG CNS Information Technology Research Center, Seoul, Korea, and the visiting Ph.D. student in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

My research interests are in the area of networked systems, with a focus on mathematical modeling and design of networking strategy. More specifically, my research has focused on exploiting the benefit of network coding and building autonomous networking strategies based on game theory, the Markov decision process and reinforcement learning. The major research challenges that I have studied are i) scalability and mobility issues in network topology design, ii) limited throughput and reliability issues in a networked system, and iii) wireless connectivity issues for heterogeneous network. For research outcomes, see Publications and Patents. Five of my papers won the best paper award and one of my patents has been transferred to RNware Co., Ltd. (transfer of technology -TOT). I won many honors including 'Minister's Award for Excellence', 'Qualcomm Innovation Award', 'The Google Anita Borg Scholarship’, ‘Korea Government Ph.D Fellowship (Global Ph.D. Fellowship)’, ‘Young Female Researcher Award’ and etc. For the full list, see Honors and Awards.

I was a visiting Ph.D student in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Medicine Group, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA working with Prof. Mihaela van der Schaar. I have collaborated with Prof. Pascal Frossard at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, Prof. Nikolaos Thomos at University of Essex, Colchester, United Kingdom, and Dr. Insoo Hwang in Google Inc., Mountain View, California, USA.

Honors and Awards

Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of networked systems, with a focus on mathematical modeling and design of networking strategy. More specifically, my research has focused on exploiting the benefit of network coding and building autonomous networking strategies based on game theory, the Markov decision process and reinforcement learning. The major research challenges that I have studied are as follows:

  1. Scalability and mobility issues in network topology design
  2. Limited throughput and reliability issues in a networked system
  3. Wireless connectivity issues for heterogeneous network
